Car jamming incidents caught on video

MIDRAND - AON South Africa, an insurance company, released a video of a car-jamming incident at a convenience store in Midrand.

The security footage at the store showed three incidents of car-jamming.

Mandy Barret from AON said one victim realised when she got home that her laptop had been stolen. She went back to the service station where security cameras showed criminals who acted as if they had not seen or done anything wrong. They blended in with the rest of the crowd.

She added, “Incidents of car-jamming have increased, especially in shopping centres. People must double check that cars are locked.”

She explained that remote jamming involves the blocking of car remotes using a household remote. “Both the car and household remote operate at a 400 megahertz frequency and criminals use this device to block people when they lock their cars.”

Midrand Police spokesperson Constable Matome Tlamela said, “People must lock their vehicles to avoid their cars being broken into.”
