Radio station goes on a fast for hunger day

MIDRAND - Jacaranda FM's Complimentary Breakfast team raised thousands for World Hunger Day on 28 May.

The show’s producer Brendon Lombard, famously known on air as Houston, said taking part in the initiative was great for him and his colleagues. “We decided to fast for 24 hours and donate any money we would have used for food within the 24 hours to charity. We managed to also raise R120 000 during that period, some of it from our listeners – we are excited about that.”

Lombard added that although going to bed hungry was not easy for most of the team, the knowledge that they were making a difference in other people’s lives through the fast and money raised made the hunger pangs “insignificant”.

“Hunger is a reality and in just 24 hours we did so much, [but] so much more can be done. All the money raised will be donated to Food Bank to assist in the fight for hunger,” he said.

According to the breakfast team, a South African Nutritional Health and Nutrition Examination survey has revealed that one in five children in South Africa go to school without eating. “World Hunger is a day aimed at raising awareness for the 842 million people who live in extreme hunger and poverty,” added Lombard.
