Young man asks for donation to buy partial feet prosthesis

MIDRAND - An 18-year-old young man from Thembisa is asking Midrand residents for donations so he can pay for silicone partial foot prosthesis.

Part of Kabelo Munyai’s feet were amputated last year after being diagnosed with a condition known as purpural vasculitis fulminous, and gangrene on both feet and left hand. Munyai currently uses crutches to walk.

Munyai said, “It was not easy to hear that I needed to have my feet amputated, but I am healing now. I would like to appeal to members of the public to help me raise

R18 000 so that I can buy silicone foot prosthesis which will allow me to move around more easily and be independent.”

Munyai has two siblings and lives with his uncle and grandmother in Thembisa. “My mother works but the money is not enough for her to meet my needs at this point. I attend school and hope to play soccer one day and study law or economics,” he said.

Thembisa Hospital spokesperson Lesibana Ledwaba confirmed that Munyai was treated by one of their doctors in 2012. She said Munyai was later referred to Steve Biko Academic Hospital where part of his feet were amputated.

Dr Ruan Louw of Ruan Louw orthopaedic services said after further consultation, Munyai was given a discounted quotation. “Munyai has no medical aid, we discounted the fee to R18 000 so that he could get a pair of silicone partial foot prosthesis with a carbon blade for energy return,” said Louw. “These are the best prosthesis for him as the gangrene resulted in bilateral forefoot amputations.”

Anyone who wishes to assist with a donation towards Munyai’s prosthesis can email Midrand Reporter on midrandreporter@caxton.co.za for Munyai’s details.
