Sign of the crimes

MIDRAND - Penny Steyn of the Making A Difference campaign's Domestic Watch meetings has planned the May lesson on crime signage.

Steyn explained that criminals used signs to inform each other about crime prospects on a property and community members were unaware of this.

“Crime signs change according to the criminal syndicate and areas in South Africa,” said Steyn. She said the lesson handout would explain these signs.

She said there were actual messages left outside properties that indicated which houses were going to be robbed on that street, if there were dogs, old people and the number of people in the house.

She said criminals used colours to indicate whether occupants could defend themselves, someone was at home, no one was at home or someone in the house was prepared to help them.

“Criminals use chalk markings outside homes to help other criminals target the rich and vulnerable,” said Steyn. “We always ask the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity or signs to the police. With this information the police will investigate.”

Steyn urged domestic workers to attend the meetings. “Making A Difference Domestic Watch has no value if we cannot get all the community to support the programme. This is the most recently written lesson in my arsenal of 68 lessons, let’s work together to fight the crime war.”

The meeting will be held at La Fiorentina on the corner of Champion and Bridle Pass roads.
