Radio station and maths initiative team up

MIDRAND - Mix FM, a community radio station in Midrand, has teamed up with a maths initiative to try and counter the low maths pass rate.

The radio station and My Maths Buddy One Book Learner project are running a May Maths telethon. Assistant programme manager at Mix FM Mayihlome Klaas said, “Companies and members of the public can donate copies of the unique evolutionary maths dictionary known as My Maths Buddy. The book offers the full basic language of maths and brings confidence in application.”

Klaas explained, “The book has over 600 words and terms provided on a gradient for Grade 3 to Grade 12 and has proven to be an excellent resource for university students too.

“We hope to get 3 000 books donated for disadvantaged schools in Tembisa. Included in the books is the delivery of workshops to educators and learners on how to best use the dictionary and gain the most out of it. The project will also focus on performance monitoring in the schools.”

A user of the My Maths Buddy Hlamulo Mtsha said, “By using the dictionary, learners can improve their understanding of maths, gain a greater affinity for the subject and see a measurable improvement in results.”
