Horse lovers to discuss road

KYALAMI - Equestrian businesses and stakeholders are invited to a meeting to discuss the impact of the proposed K56 Road on the equestrian industry and community in Kyalami and Midrand.

The road would be an east-west corridor to link the R511 to Main Road. The Greater Kyalami Conservancy is opposed to the route of the proposed road, which would destroy wetlands and the fourth largest breeding site in the world for the endangered African bullfrog.

The conservancy is also concerned about the impact the road would have on the equine industry, as it would not be conducive to ride and home horses next to a busy main road.

Traffic engineer of WSP consulting engineers, Francois van Rensburg said at a meeting in 2012 that there was a demand for the road and estimated 3 500 vehicles would use the road in the mornings and 3 000 during afternoon peak hours.

Chairperson of the conservancy, Kristin Kallesen said transport alternatives were needed. Kallesen asked interested parties to either attend or send a representative to receive input from those affected by the road.

An initial forum meeting was held on 8 May, and the second meeting will take place on 14 May at 2pm at Inanda Country Base polo clubhouse.

Kallesen said, “This is specifically to understand the impacts of the K56 on the equestrian industry in the Kyalami area. Representatives from residents’ associations, stable yards and equestrian businesses are requested to please attend.”
