Bumper bashing could lead to hijacking

MIDRAND - A trend is emerging where hijackers use their vehicle to bump the back of another vehicle to attempt to rob or hijack victims.

An incident of this nature was reported in, Hijackers now target car accidents, week ending 9 May,

Managing director of Ria Sebetsa Security Services, Danny Maduray and Midrand police spokesperson Matome Tlamela said if community members were involved in an accident and feel unsafe to alight from their vehicles, they should drive straight to their nearest police station to report the incident.

Maduray raised the question of whether this would pose problems when complainants tried to claim from their insurance company.

Spokesperson for Dial Direct Insurance, John October weighed in on the issue.

October said, “The safety and well-being of our customers will always come first. However, each case needs to be assessed on its own merits as leaving the scene of an accident may have unforeseen legal and contractual consequences.”
