Season ends on high

CARLSWALD - Carissa van Rooyen's swimming achievements were recognised at the Electric Eels swimming club's end of season gala.

It was held at the club’s home pool at the Wahoo Aquatic Centre in Sunninghill.

Van Rooyen’s mother Liezel said, “The successful gala capped off a very successful season for the club.”

She said the highlights of the season included the achievements of four swimmers, Jade Neser, Jamie Edwards, Tessa Gough and Julie-Ann Wagner who qualified for the SA Youth or Senior National Championships. Fellow swimmer Sean Moodley was congratulated on being selected as part of the Swimming South Africa Junior Squad and for representing South Africa at the Junior African Championships.

Van Rooyen was commended on breaking two South African age group records in the 50m and 100m backstroke, and for achieving five Central Gauteng records in the 50m freestyle, 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke races for age 11. She also broke the record in 50m backstroke for girls age 12.

“Electric Eels has finished the season cementing itself as one of the top swimming clubs in Gauteng,” said Van Rooyen.

She said the club was an active and successful competitive swim club which competed at school, provincial and national level.

The centre caters for swimmers from six months old upwards. It offers various programmes from pre-swimming for tots, to social swimming classes and squad training for swimmers of all abilities at school, provincial and national level.

There is also coaching for tri-athletes, waterpolo and masters swimmers.
