New policing plan outlined

MIDRAND - Midrand police station commander, Colonel Steven Moodley has outlined his police and crime plan for Midrand police for the period from April 2014 to March 2015.

Moodley said, “I want to be a strong voice for Midrand when it comes to policing and crime, both with local residents and protecting Midrand’s interests.”

He aimed to use resources effectively, improve trust and confidence in policing, work together with partners to deliver better services, put victims’ priorities firmly at the heart of service delivery, and support the police and partners to cut crime and reduce re-offending.

He said some of the priorities of the plan were to carefully manage budgets, strengthen working partnerships, maintain frontline policing and support victims of crime. Moodley added that he would compile a monthly report to review the plan, and report to the community and principals.

He worked closely with the cluster commander, Major General Vincent Leshabane, liaised with partners, carried out a survey and consulted the people of Midrand to create a “rounded, realistic plan with which we can continue to strengthen our policing service”.

He constructed the plan with insight from the community, from community meetings, surveys and emails, and consultations with groups and agencies who work to keep Midrand safe. He said the plan was “not just about policing”, but working with all aspects of the community.

“It is very important that we understand how all of these bodies are going to work together as their resources diminish,” said Moodley.

He said there were financial challenges ahead for the police service and partners in the community safety and criminal justice system, but he was determined to work hard and he was optimistic that Midrand police would continue to be a “consistently high-performing police force”.

“We have a resilient force and I want to keep it that way. A prudent budget combined with challenging but achievable priorities will go a long way to realising this aim,” he said.

He said he believed Midrand was a “safe place” and he intended for his work along with the cluster commander and partners to maintain this.

The strategy of the plan is to deliver a long-term vision for sustainable policing across Midrand.
