Double trouble

MIDRAND - A concerned Midrand resident said a new school in the area which had a similar name and logo to two existing schools was causing confusion.

The resident, Vivienne Burnett said, “The department of education should clear this up or people will think somebody is misleading the public. Two schools can not have a similar name and logo. If this school new school is registered and legal, why does it use the name and logo of two established schools in Midrand?”

Burnett told Midrand Reporter that she was told by “a reputable source, a retired principal of one of the schools in Midrand, that the Department of Education knows about the new school having a similar name as other school, but the school still operates under that name. This is confusing and may lead us to think one of the schools is bogus.”

The schools names are known to Midrand Reporter, but have been withheld pending an investigation by the Department of Education.

The department of education’s spokesperson, Phumla Sekhonyane said they knew about the new school. “We have been made aware of the similarities in the two schools and neither of the schools are bogus. We can confirm that the original public schools, a primary and high are legal, as is the new independent school that is operating under the same name.

“At the beginning of 2014 the department established a new combined school which is registered. The registration and approval of schools is done by different departments. We will investigate how the independent school was granted the same name as an already existing public school and rectify this.”
