Don’t stay off the grass

NOORDWYK - After noticing that for a few months the grass had not been cut on pavements around Noordwyk, resident Ashley David raised the issue with Midrand Reporter.

“I see the City Parks staff on other roads, but much is not being done to maintain our sidewalks and areas in Noordwyk, the grass keeps growing,” he said.

Carlswald resident, Dumi Langa said, “Why do we pay such high rates if we keep living near such tall grass, a snake could come out and bite someone. Surely grass cutting will not take the municipality too much time to see to.”

City Parks regional maintenance manager Joseph Ndou acknowledged that grass has not been cut in some areas. “Due to the heavy rains during the first quarter of this year we have had a backlog in terms of maintenance schedule,” he said.

Ndou added that City Parks would maintain the pavements that have been neglected due to the backlog. “Our main focus during the past months was largely developed parks. As from 5 May we will be starting with the main roads maintenance on Lever Road, Harry Galaun, Garden, Seventh Street and Old Pretoria Road to name a few. Once the grass is cut on main roads, we will then begin maintenance on sidewalks in residential areas.”

He said City Parks maintained flagship road islands such as on Olifantsfontein Road on a seven day cycle. “Sidewalks are maintained on a 120 day cycle or when required by clients.”
