Red alert for smash and grabs continues

MIDRAND - Police issued a warning to motorists to continue to be aware of a high number of smash and grab incidents at the New Road off-ramp.

Midrand police communications officer Constable Matome Tlamela said, “On 16 April at 9.30pm, a motorist was stationary at the traffic light on the New Road off-ramp when she suddenly heard a loud bang on the passenger’s window. While she was checking what had happened, she saw an unknown man running away and immediately she noticed that her handbag was stolen.”

The woman’s handbag contained a cellphone, documents, cosmetics and cards all at an estimated value of R1 500.

Tlamela said earlier the same night, another incident of theft out of a motor vehicle occurred at the off-ramp. She said someone shone a torch into the complainant’s car while she was waiting for the traffic light to change. “Suddenly she heard a passenger window smash. Upon investigation, she saw the suspect stole her laptop at an estimated value of R20 000,” Tlamela said.

She said no arrests had been made but police are investigating and hope to bring the suspects to book soon.
