A web of no compassion

MIDRAND - Pekingese Rescue of South Africa strongly discourages community members from posting adverts to sell their animals on classified websites.

The organisation’s, Lorraine Smalberger said people used websites as an easy way of getting rid of their animals. “Animals are so easy to discard like an old pair of shoes,” said Smalberger.

Milo, the dog is in foster care of the organisation and was one of the animals posted on a website.

“As a rescue organisation, we always follow these sites to help save animals from becoming bait in dog-fighting or other dangerous circumstances,” said Smalberger.

Milo had a severe eye condition which Smalberger said could have resulted in complete blindness if it was not treated. “This, all because his owners could not be bothered to treat their once beloved pet that they bought from a breeder. This is due to neglect and no compassion for those who cannot speak for themselves.”

She said Milo had received extensive eye surgery which cost R9 000 at Johannesburg Animal Eye Clinic and he was on the road to recovery.

The organisation hoped Milo would be able to go to a caring home in the near future.

Pekingese Rescue of South Africa is a Section 21 company and relies on the help of community members to foster and adopt its many Pekingese dogs.
