Samrand operations centre up and running

MIDRANd - South African National Roads Agency officially opened its Central Operations Centre at Samrand in Midrand on 8 April.

The agency’s chief executive officer Nazi Alli said, ” The centre is the operational nerve centre of the e-toll system for the agency. It is from here that the Gauteng Freeway Management System is operated.”

Alli said the management system used high definition cameras which were linked to the command centre. “The cameras monitor the country’s first multilane free-flow toll system. The system is managed by Electronic Toll Collection, providing road users with a smoother and safer journey.”

Alli added that the elements in enhancing road safety included improved lighting, real-time signage and management of traffic flow. “Traffic flow monitoring also highlights immediately where a road accident has occurred and activates the roads agency’s on-road services which include medical and towing services,” he said.

“Improved road services are clearly appreciated by the users who continue to pay in increasing numbers, both registered and the unregistered users. The agency is thankful for this loyal support and urges users to pay up.”

The Central Operations Centre employs 1 300 people working on a software system of which 90 percent was developed locally.
