Serious crime increases 100 percent

MIDRAND - Over the past few weeks, Midrand police have reported that crime had been on a steady increase, but last week there was a 100 percent increase in serious crime.

Midrand police arrested 53 offenders for serious crimes, and 21 people were arrested for minor offences.

However, break-ins into businesses decreased by 50 percent from the previous week and residential break-ins decreased by 40 percent.

Midrand police communications officer, Constable Matome Tlamela said trends indicated that Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday were the problematic days for crime during the week.

She said property related crimes, including theft out of motor vehicles, general theft and housebreakings increased by 48 percent from the previous week.
