No medical aid; no vaccine

MIDRAND - A woman who lives in Midrand alleged that a nurse embarrassed her at Midrand West Clinic.

She asked that her name be withheld because she used the clinic for her children’s immunisations.

The woman said she was unable to go to work because she was sick. “For a week I had terrible flu then on 31 March I decided to go to the clinic as I have no medical aid,” she said.

“When I asked the nurse if they give flu vaccines she laughed, raised her voice and told me to get medical aid if I want such services. I turned and walked away as the whole clinic burst into laughter.”

The woman said she knew that some staff at clinics treated patients badly. “Can we have better service at public clinics for once and be treated with dignity. All the nurse could have said to me was ‘no’. She had no reason to be rude and make me the laughing stock of the clinic.

“I wish I had medical aid, but as a receptionist for a small company I earn R5 000. I cannot do much with such little money.”

The clinic was not available for comment but City of Johannesburg health spokesperson for Region A to E, Nkosinathi Nkabinde said, “All clinics within the City of Johannesburg have the flu vaccine but it is only allocated to patients with chronic medical conditions and children aged six months to five years.”
