Children learn about safety

MIDRAND - Children at Piccolino Day Care in Glen Austin are a bit more clued up on safety tips, thanks to the Mr ADT Safety Show.

Darin Mc Dowall is a children’s entertainer and through security company ADT’s mascot character Mr ADT, he educates children on how to stay safe in their homes.

For 45 minutes, Mc Dowall educated the pupils on the dangers of poisons, guns, knives and fire. He also explained about “baddies”.

These included bullying, home robberies, keeping belongings safe, being alert, the danger of strangers and respecting fellow citizens.

Good and bad touching, how to use panic alarm buttons, never to open doors to strangers and knowing important emergency numbers were all part of the presentation.

Managing director of ADT central region Clive Humphrey said, “Unfortunately, in South Africa there is no escape from conversations about crime. Children are never too young to be educated and made aware, in a non-threatening manner, of the dangers that exist in our society. They need to be empowered to be able to protect themselves in a dangerous situation.”

Mc Dowell knows how to get pupils to understand the shows after eight years of appearing as Mr ADT. The show he put on for the pupils at Piccolino’s is the third show he has produced.

The shows are sponsored by ADT.

Humphrey said, “Darin has a fun, friendly way of addressing these pertinent issues. He has found the perfect balance, as the show keeps the children informed and entertained while reinforcing valuable safety tips.”
