Domestics can help reduce crime

SUN VALLEY - Making A Difference (MAD) campaign's Domestic Watch crime prevention meetings in Sun Valley will be starting again on 23 January.

Domestic Watch and police customer service trainer Penny Steyn said, “The biggest problem the police have is a lack of information. Police crime facts [statistics] show that where Domestic Watch meetings are well attended, crime has been radically reduced. Domestic workers do know what is going on in our suburbs.”

The Sun Valley meetings take place on the second last Thursday of every month at La Fiorentina on the corner of Champion and Bridle Pass roads at 11am. All domestic workers are welcome to join the meetings.

Steyn said she wanted to motivate community members to kick-start the year. Her first topic is called ‘Generosity’.

“It is multifaceted with a view to inspiring better relationships with employers, security infrastructures and companies and the police,” she explained. Steyn hopes to inspire domestic workers to do the right thing, by passing on information about criminals, potential crime and crimes that have been committed. “Even if this includes reporting family members and doing the right thing…which, in fact, is our civil duty in South Africa,” said Steyn.
