Dining for conservation

MIDRAND - Race Against Extinction, in partnership with Lory Park Animal Sanctuary, helps to educate pupils in rural schools on conservation, endangered species and anti-wildlife trafficking.

Sharon Salomon of the Midrand-based organisation said, “We deal mainly with tiger trade conservation, education and awareness, and other critically endangered species, which is very relevant in South Africa today.

“Most Asian species used in wildlife trafficking and traditional medicine are being replaced by the African version as they are disappearing in the wild, for example lion bones smuggled from Africa to the East to replace tiger bones for tiger bone wine, and of course rhino (poaching) is a well-known.”

Race Against Extinction promotes protection of wildlife and breeding with an aim to see tigers released into safe reserves in their home countries.

Salomon said Race Against Extinction would host a fundraiser on 14 November at La Vie en Rose in Illovo.

She said the evening promised to be “spectacular” with a three-course meal, welcome drink and entertainment.

Tenor Dewald von Solms would sing opera classics while El Cantante would heat up the evening with Latino rhythms.
