Hijacker gets 15 years

MIDRAND - A suspect who was arrested for an attempted hijacking and in possession of an unlicensed firearm has been sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment.

The crime occurred on 21 May at the corner of Ridge Road and Alsation Road in Glen Austin.

Midrand police communication officer, Constable Matome Tlamela said Midrand police management would like to commend the good work of Detective Constable Joseph Khauli and his expertise of investigating the case.

Tlamela offered tips on how to avoid car break-ins. She said, “Do not place valuables in plain view such as GPS devices, laptops and cellphones and always make sure that when using the remote to lock your vehicle that you beep and physically check if the vehicle is locked.”

She said don’t leave windows or the sunroof open, doors unlocked, keys in the vehicle and the garage open in plain view. Put personal items in the boot and do not leave items with personal information lying in view.

“Slow down and use common sense before leaving your car,” said Tlamela.
