R500 000 raised for SPCA

TWENTY FIVE Sandton SPCA supporters climbed Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds for Sandton SPCA. The team met through the Kili-Climb marketing campaign and have raised R500 000 for Sandton SPCA.

Emma O’Brien, a photographer who also has been doing work for the Sandton SPCA since 2001, was part of the team that took the challenge to climb the mountain. “I adopted a dog from Sandton SPCA in 2011 and wanted to do more to help them so I offered to join the Kilimanjaro expedition team so that I could document the trip. The climbers left for the trip on 2 September, on a Monday. On Tuesday we started climbing and we reached the top of Mount Kilimanjaro on Saturday. The hike was physically tough and it did get daunting as we climbed further up but all that is worthwhile when you get to the top. It was the most difficult thing I have ever done but I would do it all over again.”

O’Brien added, “Sandton SPCA assists with the rescue and adoption of abandoned or abused animals from their base in Marlboro Gardens. Some of the money raised will be allocated to that branch, and some will go to assist with running the mobile clinics in Alexandra to provide veterinary services for animals in that community.”
