Joburg opens its swimming pools

JOBURG - The City of Johannesburg has welcomed Spring by opening some of its swimming pools.

According to the city council’s community development department, about 27 swimming pools were opened while some of the remaining pools were expected to open later in the month, with others in October and December, depending on the scope of work needed for each pool.

Some of the pools currently under renovation include Yeoville and East Bank, among other swimming pools in the South of Johannesburg.

The City has set aside R30 million for the maintenance and repairs of the facilities.

Member of the Mayoral Community for Community Development, Chris Vondo, reassured residents that all the necessary processes were currently underway to ensure that the remaining pools opened between the months of September and December this year.

“Two additional pools, Murray Park and Rhodes Park, will delay opening much longer due to the amount of repair work they will be receiving. At Murray, attention would be given to major structural damage while Rhodes receives a major upgrade which will be completed by June next year,” he said.

Vondo urged residents to make maximum use of the public swimming pools to mark the start of the swimming season.

He said the City’s outdoor aquatic facilities will be open throughout the summer season from Monday to Sunday from 10am to 5.30pm; heated pools Mondays to Fridays from 7am to 7pm; and Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays pools will be open from 10am to 5pm.
