Showjumpers prepare for SA Derby

KYALAMI - Kyalami is preparing for the equestrian calendar's anticipated Galencia Property South African Derby 2013.

The SA Derby 2013 will take place from 2 to 6 October at Kyalami Equestrian Park. It will culminate in the country’s top showjumpers competing over a 1.5m jumping course on 6 October in front of an expected 5 000 spectators. CEO of Galencia Property Developments Cheng Cheng said, “Equestrian sport has evolved to be more than just a noble event, but rather a symbol of aristocratic demeanour that is represented by ideals of fair competition.”

The theme for this year is Gatsby Glitz with plenty of fashion, good food and fair. Food stalls will be available throughout the week and entertainment over the weekend includes a children’s area, beer garden, shopping village and a VIP area for members in the newly renovated Kyalami Equestrian Park Club House.

A VIP marquee tent will host 600 guests for great food and wine.

The SA Derby after-party will also be hosted in the marquee with top class acts such as Pascal & Pearce and DJ Fresh.

The 2012 South African Derby winner, Nicole Horwood said, “I’m very excited that it’s derby time again. I really enjoy the fitness and training work that goes into preparing for the derby. It’s so different to our normal everyday routine and I enjoy training over the various unique obstacles. With new sponsors on board I am sure this year will prove to be as exciting as ever. I hope to repeat the same performance as last year and remain focused and calm on the big day.”

Another rider and horse to look out for is Barry Taylor, South Africa’s second ranked showjumper. “I am riding

Nissan Lassiter in the Galencia Property SA Derby this year. It will be his first time and if he places I will be very happy. He is a brave, bold horse and I think a perfect derby horse. His training is coming along and he has jumped a few world cups and 1.50 classes this year to get mileage in that division.”

Entrance is free from 2 to 4 October for the preliminary rounds and qualifiers.
