Midrand Victim Empowerment Centre up and running

The Midrand Victim Empowerment Centre is based at the Midrand Police Station and is overseen by Nicola Arend.

The centre aims to facilitate access to a range of services for all people living or working in Midrand who have been traumatised by violence and crime.

Police spokesperson, Constable Matome Tlamela said, “In the past the focus of the centre was the movement of offenders through the criminal justice system, and while this is critical, serving the needs of the victim is vital too. Invariably this victim-centred approach can result in a decline of victimisation while simultaneously improving service standards in the system.”

Trauma counsellors at the centre see a wide range of victims with a diversity of needs. The counsellors assist the victims in their struggle to overcome reactions to fear, anger, guilt and shame and offer opportunities to access relevant services.

Trauma counsellors are available by appointment six days a week and offer free confidential trauma debriefing.
