Defrauding the animals
MIDRAND - Midrand police confirmed that a committee member of Midrand SPCA was arrested for fraud on 6 November.
National senior inspector of National SPCA, Jaco Pieterse said there had been rumours that the accused was a bookkeeper at the SPCA, but this was not true and affirmed she was a committee member.
“The woman stole an estimated amount of R262 000 over a period of time,” he said.
Pieterse added that the amount stolen would not cause the organisation to close or have financial difficulties. “Due to the fraud charges and the misappropriated funds we will engage the services of an auditor.”
The auditors would investigate all transactions in the organisation’s bank accounts and present their findings to the National SPCA board.
Pieterse asked the community to keep supporting the SPCA in spite of the fraud charges and said the animals would be the most affected if that support was not forthcoming.

Midrand police confirmed that a bookkeeper for Midrand SPCA was arrested.
Midrand police communications officer Matome Tlamela confirmed that the woman was arrested for fraud on 6 November and was detained at the station but has since been transferred to Olifantsfontein Police Station.
An email from an anonymous person was sent to Midrand Reporter on 8 November which alleged that a bookkeeper had defrauded Midrand SPCA of R300 000 by transferring the funds into her personal account under false pretences.
