Midrand kwaito musician making it big

Mudau started singing at a very young age and honed his talent when he was in his primary school’s choir. However, once he got to high school he was influenced by kwaito musicians like Trompie and Alaska.

He went on to become a dancer for other kwaito musicians and this led him to start writing his own music.

Mudau is a kwaito purist, and believes that genres should not be mixed.

“I perform the old kwaito, the real kwaito,” he said. “I like to keep it traditional and it has to even reflect in my clothing style.”

Mudau performs under the stage name Not Guilty and already three of his songs are being played on various radio stations.

Mudau’s music reflects memories of his childhood as he also converts childhood stories and poems, told to him by his elders, into songs.

By day Mudau is a driver for a pharmaceutical company in Midrand but all his spare time is devoted to music.

Mudau said, “My manager has really encouraged me to pursue my dream. I am really thankful for the support.”

He is currently recording an album at a studio in Soweto.

When asked what his plans for the future were he replied, “I’d love to win a SAMA (South African Music Award) one day, and my ultimate dream is to be known as the king of kwaito.”
