Dominey Alexander set to compete in the Toyota African Derby

Toyota African Derby to take place at the Kyalami Equestrian Park.

Dominey Alexander, a prominent equestrian from Midrand, is a strong contender for the upcoming Toyota African Derby at Kyalami Equestrian Park from October 3-6.
The event will culminate in the main showjumping event on the last day in the prestigious Bob Charter Arena.

The 57-year-old, who claimed victory in 2022, aims to enhance his accolades on the 1 200m course featuring 18 obstacles, which has remained largely unchanged since its inception. The derby, a hallmark of the equestrian calendar, demands unmatched courage, strength, and endurance from its participants.

This year, thanks to headline partner Toyota, there is added motivation to win, as the rider accumulating the highest points across three rounds will claim a brand-new Toyota Crown together with the prestigious trophy.
“I am 57, and fortunately, this sport allows for longevity,” Alexander said. “I am very excited about the Toyota Derby, it is a fantastic event that happens only once a year. Growing up around my mother’s riding school, horses have always been a part of my life.

“Having won the derby event in 2022, I would like to try to win again, so keep your fingers and toes crossed I can do it again.”

Heather Mpofu, the show director at Kyalami Park Club, noted, “Toyota has once again elevated this event, and we are extremely grateful. We have plans to celebrate equestrian excellence, blending speed, style, and showmanship at the finish line.

“Attendees will see top horse and rider combinations across various disciplines including the Show Horse Derby, Working Riding Derby, Working Hunter Derby, Dressage Derby, and Compleat Horse Derby.”

Glenn Crompton, the vice president of marketing at the Toyota African Derby, expressed pride in sponsoring such an outstanding event.

“Becoming a professional horse rider requires immense physical strength, coordination, and a profound understanding of equine behaviour. These riders showcase exceptional balance, agility, and quick decision-making while forging a harmonious bond with their horses. Their dedication to training, discipline, and the emotional connection they share with their horses is truly inspiring,” said Crompton.
