Noordwyk’s Liebenberg and Eighth roads cleaned, despite poor turnout

Lebogang Shovote said one showed interest and this is a good indication that they need to keep on doing what we are doing.

Co-founder of the Clean up Midrand initiative Lebogang Shovhote believes that the third session was a success despite low attendance.

She said she believes that because they are still starting, the turnout is low, but she’s adamant that the more people see them clean the streets and parks, the more people will join in.
A third instalment of the campaign was held on September 14, targeting Liebenberg Road in Noordwyk.

Shovhote said they had a successful clean up, even though the numbers were not what they had expected.
“We will not be discouraged since we realise that such things take time to get established and grow. To create more awareness of what we do, we decided to reach out to our public primary and high schools to participate in the next clean up. Hopefully, the schools’ environmental clubs will get involved, or an environmental club will be established if there isn’t one,” suggested Shovhote.

She said there were some positive aspects around the dark clouds of poor attendance.

“A jogger was jogging up Liebenberg Road and he cut his run short and helped us to clean up. We exchanged contact details and he decided to come regularly. That was a good indication that we need to keep on doing what we are doing. It is still in its infancy stage and over time it will grow,” added Shovhote.

She said an unnamed small business owner also volunteered to join them and offer her services to help with emails and newsletters of the initiative. Shovhote feels that such people are God-sent.

The next clean up will be on October 5 from 07:00, cleaning from the corner of Tambotie Street, working up towards Garden Road.
