Midrand suspect wanted for cellphone theft arrested in Braamfontein

Johannesburg Metro Police spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla said the 40-year-old woman is believed to be a specialist in pickpocketing around the two suburbs.

A 40-year-old female suspect, previously convicted for pickpocketing in Midrand, was arrested by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) Tactical Response Unit for theft in Braamfontein.

The white Mercedes Benz car she was driving was sought by authorities allegedly after being used commissioning of serious crimes around Midrand and Sandton.

JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla said on February 18 while conducting crime prevention patrols in Braamfontein, officers received information from Vumacam of a Mercedes Benz sought for being used for the theft of a cellphone in Midrand and Sandton.

“The officers proceeded to search for the vehicle, and it was found at Biccard Street, Braamfontein with a female occupant. The officers informed the woman that her vehicle was wanted for being used in the commission of a crime and as the officers were explaining, one of the officers identified her as a suspect who was once charged and found guilty of cellphone theft and is alleged to be a specialist in pickpocketing,” said Fihla.

The suspect was arrested and detained by Sandton police. Fihla said the woman was due to appear in court this week [Week ending 23 February].

“The sought vehicle was seized and booked in at SAPS Aeroton pound for further verification.”
