Outgoing Midrand Striders chairperson reflects on her year’s tenure

Midrand Striders' outgoing chairperson Lwazi Khumalo wishes she could have secured more sponsors because it was expensive to host annual races.

The outgoing Midrand Striders Running Club chairperson believes the club achieved great things and as she steps down from the role, her tenure will always be a memorable one.

Lwazi Khumalo had been a committee member for nine years and at the helm of the chairperson role for a year after replacing Michelle Acton. Khumalo said the best part about writing the chairperson’s report was an opportunity to reflect on the year that had passed and remind me of everything the club had accomplished.

” A definite highlight is always our annual race. After a two-year hiatus, we were able to host our annual half marathon. As I step down, I do so knowing that the future is bright and exciting, I look forward to handing over the leadership role to the new chairperson and wish all the best to the new committee of 2024,” added Khumalo.

When asked if there were things she wished she could have accomplished during her tenure, Khumalo said it would have been to secure sponsorship for the annual race.

“Also scouting female development runners. I would’ve loved to assist underprivileged runners to provide opportunities for talent, especially females. We had a 100% completion from our ladies at Comrades last year. I would love to add more ladies to that list. Although my work schedule is rather demanding, I will be staying on the committee in a lesser role for continuity.”

She said as she passed the baton to the incoming leader, fortunately, the incoming chairperson had also been involved in the committee for several years and had been engaging with various stakeholders for the growth and development of the club and its members.

“I do not doubt that the future is in excellent hands.”
