Midrand police welcome 14 crime prevention wardens

Station commander of the Midrand SAPS says the 14 crime prevention wardens will assist police with trio crimes such as carjackings, house and business robberies.

Ahead of the fast-approaching festive season, Midrand police’s manpower was bolstered with an additional 14 crime prevention wardens on November 1.
This came as good news to the station commander Brigadier Molefi David Tsotsotso who said the wardens would assist the station immensely in combatting and preventing crime in the Midrand policing precinct. He added they would be paired with the crime prevention and social crime prevention team to make the area a safe and secure environment.

“As we approach the festive season, the crime wardens will play a huge role in helping us fight crime. Their arrival will help us to address among others the trio crimes [hijackings, and house and business robberies],” said Tsotsotso.

The wardens, who work closely with police, community patrollers and other law enforcement agencies, have the power to arrest suspects without a warrant.

Their responsibility extends to patrolling neighbourhood hotspots, attending to complaints, reporting suspicious activities to the SAPS and maintaining law and order.

Addressing the wardens, Tsotsotso said it was important for them to be disciplined and refrain from corruption. “You will be working with committed police officers in performing crime prevention duties. It is therefore important that you carry yourself with dignity and ensure that you work even harder to fight crime that is increasing in our area.”
Tsotsotso concluded by thanking the Gauteng Department of Community Safety, MEC Faith Mazibuko for adding the much-needed manpower.
