Midrand Chess Club invites youth to hone their chessboard skills

Midrand Chess Club is back to hosting exclusive chess coaching sessions every Saturday from 09:00 to 17:30 at Halfway House Primary School.

The coach of Midrand Chess Club, Kgosiemang Molefe believes that passion is essential for long-term success in chess.

He said chess clubs provided an environment where players could learn, compete, and bond over their love for the game.

“Success in chess is not just about winning games but also about personal growth and development,” he added.

Jordan Ranashinge takes time to think of his move.

The club is well-known for its child-focused activities, despite having many talented adult players.

It created coaching programmes for schools in Midrand which led to the launch of the Midrand Chess Schools League where schools compete for the Midrand Chess Schools Crown.

In 2017, the club’s president at the time, Kris Eale left to work in Haiti, and Norman Maliga became the new president.

Abel Takaindisa and Jordan Ranashinge play against each other at Midrand Chess Club.

This change led to a shift in the club’s activities, with a focus on adult chess practices.

“During the pandemic, the club saw a decline in membership and a lack of engagement, our struggle became recruiting members, especially young players and buying chess materials such as boards and clocks,” Molefe added.

During this period, Maliga launched the club’s first online tournament to keep adult members involved in the game

In 2019, Eale returned to South Africa to revive youth chess. The club relaunched its Saturday practices and coaching sessions in 2021 aimed at rebuilding a new generation of young players.

“Coaching helps beginners learn the fundamentals of chess, identify their weaknesses, and improve their skills more rapidly. Coaches also serve as mentors, imparting valuable life lessons.”
