Pikitup bin overflowing with uncollected garbage for over a month

“The overflow of garbage will cause rat infestation which can cause environmental and health concerns. And I am not accepting this bad service from Pikitup,” said the irate Mel James.

Cambanos and Son Agencies CC in Halfway House have allegedly not had the garbage from their skip bin collected for weeks.

Mel James, admin manager of the company situated on 34 Richards Drive in Halfway House, said they last collected around May 29.
She said the bin is now filled to the brim and as a result, it is now overflowing. The overflowing garbage can fill another skip bin – which would make it two loads of bins.
However, on July 12, James confirmed that Pikitup collected the bin following Midrand Reporter’s inquiry.

James said she was worried that the overflowing garbage could cause a rat infestation and that could negatively affect their business. “We only have one bin, and it has not been collected for almost two months now. I think the last time they were here was on May 29 and since then they have not collected the bin at our business premises,” said James.
She said the company pays its account every month and that it’s unacceptable that they have to beg to get quality services. “The overflow can cause environmental and health concerns. And I am not accepting this bad service from Pikitup,” added James. The paper contacted James on July 10 to check if the bin has been collected, and she said ‘not yet’.

Midrand Reporter then contacted Pikitup spokesperson Muzi Mkhwanazi on July 7, 10 and 11, and responded on July 12, saying the above allegation was subject to investigation. “However, to restate the skip in the said company takes quite some time to get full and results in the consequent time lag between collections. Pikitup trucks were dispatched to the company on July 11 but could not collect the skip because it could not be accessed because the company has extended its carport making accessing the skip difficult. On July 12, a team has been dispatched with a lift-on truck to try and address the situation,” said Mkhwanazi.

He said the company had extended its carport without considering the negative implications that the act had on the collection of the skip bin.
Mkhwanazi concluded that commercial services bins are collected on a weekly basis.
