The first Student Peer Support Initiatives In Higher Education Book in the country

“My personal thought is that higher education provides opportunities. When you are given such opportunities and every student should be given a chance, with the support they need to continue their journey,” says the author of the Student Peer Support Initiatives in Higher Education book.

Teaching and learning specialist at IIE’s Varsity College Waterfall, Thaiurie Govender is a true believer in new student support programmes and one of the five authors of the Student Peer Support Initiatives in Higher Education book.

The first of its kind in South Africa, the book is intended for individuals in higher education who are involved in student peer support initiatives to enhance student retention and success.

The aim of the book is to create a working resource focused on student peer support to stimulate reflection, and dialogue that develops responsive strategies to foster student engagement and learning.

“I have always believed that ‘knowledge is power’ as Nelson Mandela said. My personal thought is that higher education provides opportunities and when you are given such opportunities every student should be given a chance, with the support they need to continue their journey, and then go on to make a difference in the world,” said Thaiurie.

“My Grandad always believed in education and its vast possibilities – I have seen those possibilities and the students that come to us should see them as well.”
