Midrand teams perform inconsistently in SAB League

Midrand has four teams competing in the SAB League, and on February 18 and 19, three of the teams failed to win any of their league matches with the exception of one.

Having won their last SAB League match on January 28 against Malandela Mighty Heroes, Indlovu FC was back to its winning ways this past weekend after being the only Midrand side in the league’s yellow stream to register three points.

Midrand currently has four teams competing in the league. On February 18 and 19, three local teams — Hawks, Midrand Spoilers, and Super Rovers failed to win any of their league matches. The only exception was last year’s Midrand Senior Premier League winners, the Elephants, who won 2-0 on the 19th due to a walk-over after competitors, Wolfs failed to arrive on time at Rabie Ridge Stadium.

Although they lost 3–2 against Double Touch on the 18th, Indlovu centre-back, Lukhanyo ‘Ntsimbi’ Mapeyi says their walk-over win is motivation enough for the team to start winning again.

“The only problem we need to fix is this thing of conceding week in and week out but I am pretty sure that we will fix it as a team,” said Ntsimbi.

“League is a marathon and anyone can win it. When you check we are still playing the first round so if we can win all our remaining games of the first round and then start on good form on the second round then I am sure we can still finish in a good position.”

Third-place holders, Hawks were first beaten 2–0 at home by Prestige Football Academy on the 18th before travelling to Zoo Lake on the 19th to play log leaders Opopo FC. The match resulted in the Midrand side suffering a 1–0 loss.

Hawks player, Kamogelo Makgosing, said that it was not a lucky week for his team but they will come back stronger as they are the only Midrand team that shows a hunger to win the league.

“We couldn’t handle the pressure from our opponents even from other teams on the sideline that we compete with. We are one team that is being watched with caution because we are top three and no one expected us to reach this position,” Makgosing explained.

Super Rovers didn’t fare any better than Hawks as they went on to their eighth league match without a win after being thrashed 3–1 on the 18th by Hungry Lions at the Cosmo City Multipurpose Centre.

Spoilers were thrashed 10-0 at Jabavu Stadium by FC Barcenal. Currently, Spoilers are ranked 16th with 11 points after 14 games, while Rovers are ranked 18th with 7 points after 14 games.

With 19 points after 15 games, Indlovu is in thirteenth position, while Hawks cruises with 30 points after 17 league encounters.
