Former Curro Waterfall head girl shares her plans for the future, and coaching desires

With the 2023 Netball World Cup to be held in Cape Town later this year, aspiring young coach Welisa Buthelezi hopes to attend some games.

Ex-Curro Waterfall head girl Welisa Buthelezi describes herself as an avid netball player, who also spends most of her time reading novels if she’s not at the gym.

Buthelezi (18) from Waterfall –but currently in Centurion – says she is a firm believer in the phrase, ‘It’s not over until you win in life.’

She said she would love to play netball at a professional level while using her passion for helping people to promote healthy living and maintain their physical ability. “I think that is who I am. I truly believe that your attitude should always, be ‘if I’m going to have to believe my whole life, then I’m not going to stop believing.’ If you give up after the second time or the 30th time or whatever it is, what it really means is that you didn’t want it bad enough,” said Buthelezi.

Buthelezi said she started playing netball at the tender age of seven years old and it has been the most fulfilling and transformative experience.
She added that netball has taught her the importance of diversity in skills, and the value of fairness and consistency.

“I would like to share my love for netball with young boys and girls by coaching. Coaching netball is about more than just netball. It’s about sharing your experiences with the players and building a family among your team.”
Buthelezi said she plays as a centre and describes her position as the engine of the team.
“Centres are unique in netball because their role is not defined as an attacker or defender. It is the centre’s job to ensure that game plans are executed accordingly.”

With the 2023 Netball World Cup to be held in Cape Town later this year, she has never watched the Netball World Cup live before but this year she was definitely planning to attend some games.

“I am very excited as South Africa will host the World Cup for the very first time with South Africa [Spar Proteas Netball team] hoping to claim victory on home soil,” Buthelezi concluded.
