Ria Sebetsa Security gives back to the community through self-defence lessons

The latest South Africa crime statistics reveal an increase in overall crime while violent crimes remain at unacceptable levels with 9 516 cases of rape and 6 424 murders being reported.

The Democratic Alliance Shadow Minister of Police Andrew Whitfield stated that South Africa has become a gruesome war zone for women and children who are raped, murdered and maimed every day.

In the last quarter, 855 women and children were murdered, 11 734 cases of assault with grievous bodily harm were reported against women, and 1 670 cases against children.

In an effort to teach local women and children to steer away from a threat, local security company Ria Sebetsa hosted a free self-defence training session at its premises on November 5.

Danny Maduray, CEO of Ria Sebetsa, said self-defence courses are extremely important since they focus on how to quickly and efficiently destroy an attacker, as well as prevent physical confrontations from occurring.

“Training helps you to become physically and emotionally fit. Having the ability to defend yourself increases your self-esteem and boosts your confidence.”

Residents came out to experience fitness and self-defence techniques with the guidance of personal instructors.

Renay Kusch and Tshenolo Mampe from Virgin Active kicked off the day with some warm-ups with the residents before Wiben Mabada and Mpho Tsotetsi taking charge of karate lessons.

Different techniques were taught to the attendees including the eye strike which can be used in a standing or prone position. “Often, simply driving your fingers toward your assailant’s eyes will cause them to recoil. Even if you don’t make contact, it creates space to set up a more devastating blow,” explained Maduray.

A knee strike is also recommended over any type of standing kick as it is easy to use and can be delivered while one stays centred and close to the ground.
