How to make a paper plate heart sewing craft

This paper plate heart sewing craft is an excellent way to introduce preschoolers to sewing. Best of all, it's super easy to make.

Not only is this paper plate heart sewing craft easy to make, it’s also great for fine motor skills development!

What you need

  • Paper plates (coloured plates are best but white also works)
  • Scissors
  • A hole punch
  • Some wool
  • Tape
  • Pencils

How to make it

  1. Help your child fold the paper plate in half and cut a heart shape out of the centre of the paper plate.
  2. In pencil, trace the heart template onto the centre of another paper plate, then cut out the heart shape.
  3. Punch holes around the entire perimeter of the heart.
  4. Thread a long piece of wool onto a yarn needle. Show your child how to pull the needle through one of the holes around the heart and tape the end of the wool to the back of the paper plate. Continue wrapping the wool around the heart’s various holes until each one is full.
  5.  When your child is finished threading the wool through all of the holes in the heart, cut the needle and tape the end of the wool to the back of the plate.
  6. Finally, hang the paper plate heart with a ribbon.
