Fat Cats Athletic Club, South Africa’s fastest-growing road running club, successfully hosted its fourth annual Fat Cats 10k Race at Waterfall Park on October 9.

The runners were participating in 10km and 5km races as well as the family-oriented Nappy Dash and Kitten Miler that caters for children and pets.

The Fat Cats 10km Race was hosted virtually for two consecutive years – 2020 and 2021 – due to the outbreak of Covid-19.

Running in his boxer running club’s colours was Nicholas Seoposengwe (21) who won the 10km race with a time of 30:54. Seoposengwe is a full-time runner, and he is coached by Olympic athlete Hendrick Ramaala at Zoo Lake in Parkview.

“I’m glad I won the Fat Cats 10k race. I am hoping to finish the year stronger after winning my biggest race a few weeks ago, which is the Absa Run Your City race,” said Seoposengwe.

In the female category, Marelise Retief (36) took the honours in 38:37. This was her second win in 24 hours after winning the Chamberlain Capital Classic in Pretoria on October 8.

The sports scientist is no stranger to podium finishes as she has won almost every race on the calendar, including half-marathons and full marathons.

“I held back a bit yesterday (October 8) in Pretoria because I wanted to win the Fat Cats 10k race. I’m glad that my body responded well, and I enjoyed the run. My next big thing now will be the Kaapsehoop marathon in November,” said Retief.

Fat Cats Athletic Club Race Director Channelle van Wyk said the club is excited about the success of the race. “We are excited that finally, we went back and ran the streets. I was excited that many people heeded our call to register as families. I also saw a couple of families also pounding the streets with their pets. That is the spirit we like seeing at our events as our values are very much around the family,” Van Wyk said.

“Proceeds from this race will benefit underprivileged children in provinces where our club has a footprint. These are Gauteng, Western Cape, Limpopo, and the Free State,” Van Wyk concluded.
