Midrand Local Football Association women soccer teams battle it out in a top 8 tournament

First place was won by Home Defenders after beating runners-up Super Midrand 4–3 on penalties after a goalless draw, while third place went to Fire Sisters.

Sports tournament organiser Bonolo Mokoatle partnered with Midrand Local Football Association and Hollywoodbets to host a top-eight knockout soccer tournament for girls at Rabie Ridge Stadium.

The tournament took part on September 24 and aimed at identifying talent and creating opportunities for recruiting players while providing opportunities for young girls to showcase their abilities.

First place went to Home Defenders after beating runners-up Super Midrand 4–3 on penalties after a goalless draw in normal time, while third place went to Fire Sisters.

Mokoatle said such tournaments were important since they commemorated Heritage Day and also allowed the players to actively participate in what they loved.

“Our tournament was successful because young girls were able to leave the stadium with excitement, we identified potential talent and made recommendations and there was good officiating from our officials,” said Mokoatle.

At least 12 players were identified by Mokoatle as being worthy of playing at a higher level so she recommended them for evaluation at bigger clubs.

“It was amazing to see the talent of both coaches and players, and especially the passion that they displayed. I have always hosted games of this kind for different divisions, and I plan on continuing to do so with improvements per tournament.”

As part of her efforts, she seeks to create more partnerships that can enrich soccer coaching programmes and administrative training for coaches.

“Also, a partnership that will help clubs with equipment and kits will be essential so we can at least professionalise the players at this grassroots level.”
