Local celebs take the plunge in support of Special Olympics

Over 150 people took the plunge to raise funds for the athlete at Special Olympics South Africa ahead of this year’s Special Olympics South Africa National Summer Games.

More than 150 local celebrities and well-known personalities took the plunge on September 10 to help raise funds for this year’s Special Olympics South Africa National Summer Games.

In its sixth year, the Polar Plunge was presented by the Bryanston-based non-profit Special Olympics South Africa at Altitude Beach in Fourways.

“Besides raising much-needed funds, the plungers also help to raise awareness around the Special Olympics movement and the incredible achievements of their athletes,” said Ancilla Smith, CEO of Special Olympics South Africa.

Special Olympics ambassador Kim Jayde is excited to take the plunge.

Last year the plunge raised more than R120 000, and a further R100 000 was pledged for the Special Olympics World Winter Games earlier this year. These games were unfortunately cancelled so the funds raised last year will also be committed to support the summer games as well.

The summer games will also see the selection of the national team that will take part in next year’s Special Olympics World Summer Games in Germany.
