Local foundation founder wins accolade at 8th Vita Basadi Awards ceremony

Life 4 U chairperson Mpho Mofokeng eager to help develop future leaders through her foundation aimed at helping those who come from destitute families within her community.

Chairperson of a local foundation Life 4 U Foundation, Mpho Salaminah Mofokeng was bestowed with the Community Builder of the Year Award.

Mofokeng received the award at this year’s 8th Vita Basadi Awards hosted by the Gauteng Provincial Legislature on August 31.

The Vita Basadi Awards honours excellence in voluntary acts of community service by Gauteng women who help those around them and make a positive impact in their communities without reward.

The Community Builder of the Year category recognises a woman who has shown courage and commitment to empowering her community to sustain itself through business ventures.

This is a leader who inspires collective action by creating employment opportunities through co-operatives, income-generating projects and others. This is a woman who inspires a culture of entrepreneurship in her community.

Mofokeng, who is the co-founder and the chairperson of the Ivory Park-based Life 4 U Foundation, said she built this organisation from humble beginnings into a formidable organisation.

She said through her centre she provided much-needed after-school care and support to disadvantaged children and community members in Tembisa and Ivory Park.

This includes homework support, reading programmes and numeracy activities, physical stimulation and recreational activities in a safe environment.

“The foundation feeding scheme feeds over 600 disadvantaged community members daily, and supports 1 300 impoverished widows and orphans around Gauteng with well-packed food parcels and clothes. We also have a Wash 4 Life Schools Hygiene programme that reaches 30 000 learners annually to educate them about water conservation, hygiene and good sanitisation in schools. L4U annually helps about 300 youth to find opportunities and employment,” said Mofokeng.

She said about 200 needy learners from Ivory Park and Tembisa received school uniforms annually.

“The organisation annually hosts numerous awareness campaigns to fight children and women abuse, drug abuse, poverty and youth unemployment. We have also recently launched the Men and The Women’s forum to combat GBV.”
