MMC Tembe’s three-month crime prevention plan for Region A

A three-month temporary plan from Public Safety MMC David Tembe is aimed at tackling and clamping down crime activities to ensure safety within the City.

Public Safety MMC David Tembe said he would rather have sleepless nights fighting crime than see lawlessness increase in the city.

He said this when speaking at a Region A community meeting where he met with various ward councillors and residents to discuss challenges being faced in the communities.
Lawlessness was the pertinent topic which was raised as a concern by about 50 attendees at Indaba Hotel in Fourways on June 8.

Tembe was accompanied by acting Chief of Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD), Thulani Maxwell Khanyile and other authorities.

He promised to put a three-month crime strategy plan in place which would address corrupt police, beggars with children at robots, reckless driving and hijacking among his top priorities.

“Operations such as Nomakanjani [no matter what or by any means necessary] and Buya Mthetho [bring back the law] will play a key role in our efforts to fight crime because they have shown great results previously. As far as crime hotspots areas, we will try to have more police visibility and put out patroller vehicles to frequently visit those areas in intervals,” said Tembe.

He said more than 1 800 JMPD officers have been deployed to patrol the city.

“Policing is about consistency. I am optimistic about a block patrol and zonal policing technique to help with criminal activities. We also need to enforce municipal by-laws to eradicate land invasions. Reckless drivers will have to watch out since speed cameras and smart roadblocks are coming back on the city’s roads. That’s my job, to ensure people feel safe from all aspects.”

He concluded that people should be able to walk down the street without any fear of being mugged.
