The latest 2021/22 national crime statistics for the fourth quarter paint a bleak picture for Midrand police.
From January to March this year, the police station recorded 291 incidents of commercial crime, although this was a slight drop of 1.4% compared to the same period last year in which 295 cases were recorded.
Commercial crimes include corruption, fraud, forgery, embezzlement and money laundering.
Contact crimes increased by 13.2% after recording 385 cases compared to last year’s 340.
Police Minister Bheki Cele released the fourth quarter statistics on June 3 in parliament.
He said police management and provincial commissioners needed to account and explain what went wrong and find solutions that would help restore the trust of communities.
“No answer justifies these dismal figures. But we all agreed that all provinces, districts, clusters and stations need to do things differently if indeed we want to see desired outcomes. After all, police officers cannot police communities they are not part of. Everyone has a job to do, do it and do it well,” said Cele.
However, property-related crimes in the precinct, which include burglary, motor vehicle theft and stock theft, had seen a decline.
This quarter, 284 property-related crimes were recorded in the Midrand policing area compared to 345 incidents last year in the same quarter.
