Lesedi, Kgosi, and Olwethu on target as Midrand High thrash sorry Curro Rivonia

Midrand Highs' coach praised his team's win but acknowledged that his strikers were still not finishing well.

A pulsating school league match took place at Midrand High School on April 22 when 10-man Midrand High School defeated 10-man Curro Rivonia 3–1.

Coach Edgar Moloko’s home team threatened the visitors for much of the first half when Curro keeper Dominic van Derpol was called upon to deny Ofentse Dikobe’s effort and a Siyabonga Ntshingila header.

Midrand High kept the pressure on the opposition but Dominic stood tall, brilliantly saving strikes from Lesedi Motale, Mahlatse Ledwaba, and Siyabonga.

In the middle of the first half, Ofentse and a Curro defender were given straight red cards by the match official after fighting on the pitch, leaving both teams with 10 men.

Despite struggling to break down the visitors in the first half, Midrand improved in the second half and scored five minutes after the break thanks to Lesedi’s strike.

Kgosi Motsisi doubled Midrand’s lead in the 63rd minute with a ferocious header from an in-swinger corner-kick which headed into the bottom right corner of Dominic’s net.

As a result of a reckless challenge from a Midrand player inside the 18-yard box, Curro were awarded a penalty and managed to pull one back through Jose Orozco’s well-taken penalty with 15 minutes remaining.

Curro were on the hunt for the equaliser when substitute Olwethu Gumede added another nail to the visitor’s coffin by beating two Curro defenders and lashing in a third with a brilliant individual strike.

While Moloko was pleased with their win, he said they still needed to improve their finishing. “Despite our good play in combination, we struggled with our strikers’ finishing. Fortunately, the substitutes I made also paid off because you need to plan both on and off the pitch.”
