New local football association chairperson urges committee to work hard

Newly elected chairperson Sthembiso Buthelezi said he will be happy if they (him and his executive) can achieve at least 80% of what they want to do in their four-year tenure.

When the outgoing Midrand Football Local Association (MLFA) treasurer Bennet Mmotla called out Sthembiso Buthelezi’s name, there was a roar of jubilation from members.

This was when Buthelezi was voted in as chairperson of the association recently at Ivory Park Hall with about 100 club representatives in attendance to cast their votes.

Buthelezi beat renowned football administrators Siyabulela Loyilane and Samuel Maboa by a resounding 53 votes to six and three respectively.

“I feel like there is a lot of work to be done in order to transform MLFA. I believe we will achieve everything I said in my acceptance speech together with my new committee. We now have huge responsibilities on our hands and each committee must work hard to deliver positive results,” said Buthelezi.

By virtue of being the only woman vying for the deputy chairperson position, Loyilane was voted as deputy chairperson as per the association’s constitution which states that a woman should be elected as one of the deputies. Charles Makhafola is the other deputy.

Luyolo Mafuna got the nod for the general secretary role while Makarina Mokoena, who is a former secretary, will now be Mafuna’s deputy.

In his acceptance speech, Buthelezi said he would work hard to ensure that the association attains sponsorship to cover their operational costs.
Buthelezi said he would be happy if the management could achieve at least 80% of what they wanted to do in their four-year tenure.

“If we achieve anything less than 50% of what we want to do, then I will consider our time as the executive of the association as a failure.”

When asked if he will contest the 2026 elections, Buthelezi said he would because he believed in growth and wanted new challenges.

Mmotla was replaced by Ben Seemela as treasurer.
