Local 9-year-old shows talent in both soccer and cricket

HALFWAY GARDENS — Apart from cricket, he has been selected for the U13 Northerns Football Club.

Certainly, talent is beyond measure as Eli Young from Halfway Gardens has shown phenomenal talent in both cricket and soccer at just nine years old.

A learner at Summerhill Preparatory School in Midrand, Eli recently performed outstandingly in a cricket match for his school.
He took five wickets in two overs in the U10 match and followed that up by scoring 52 not out, a knock which included four sixes.

“I am sure this must be a record. This is his third score of 50 or better this season and his second five-wicket haul. He is nine years old but also plays for the U13 cricket team,” said his proud father Angus.

Apart from cricket, Eli has been selected for the U13 Northerns Football Club – Total Football Excellence team which will compete in the Gauteng Development League against Supersport United, Kaizer Chiefs, and Orlando Pirates among others.

“Sports does not have an impact on his studies,” Angus added. “He is consistently been recognised as one of the top performers in his grade.”

Last year Eli was awarded a top three academic merit achiever award by the school proving that he can manage his sport and academics.

Eli has also been praised for his sportsmanship and leadership by Reece Prinsloo, the head of sports, arts and culture at Summerhill Prep.

“Eli is an exceptional cricketer, averaging 46.6 in seven games, with two 50s at U10 level. He is a gentleman both on and off the field,” Prinsloo said.
