Security shot after a Glen Austin business robbery attempt

GLEN AUSTIN – Midrand Police Station's acting commander, Colonel Hosea Mantji has called on security companies to put backup measures in place for officials who act alone due to trends of security officers getting shot by criminals.

A security officer has been critically wounded following an attempted robbery at a recycling business on Pitzer Road in Glen Austin.

According to Constable Eliot Mabulane, spokesperson for the Midrand Police Station, the crime took place on February 24, around 05:00.

Mabulane said that police received a complaint about a robbery at the said location. Upon arrival, police found a security official lying on the ground, bleeding from his upper body.

“The man was taken to the hospital as he needed urgent medical attention.

“After conducting a preliminary investigation, it was discovered that nothing was taken from the property.”

The acting Station Commander for the Midrand Police Station, Colonel Hosea Mantji, condemned the actions of the alleged criminals pointing out that officers are now frequently targeted.

Hosea called upon the management of security companies to strengthen their strategy of deployment to ensure that there is always backup in instances where officers work alone.

“The killings and attacks on security officers is now our concern and measures will be taken to trace suspects and arrests will be made soon,” said Mantji.

Mabulane concluded that a case of attempted murder was opened and investigations were underway.
