Midrand SPCA help rescue ducks

MIDRAND — They managed to successfully catch two of the ducks, one which they could untangle and release themselves and the other one was transported to a nearby veterinary clinic.

A fishing line or hook can become deadly for wildlife if not discarded properly.

Midrand SPCA recently received a call about three waterfowl that had hooks and lines stuck in their beaks and legs. According to Midrand SPCA, they had seen an increase in the need for SPCAs to intervene and get involved in cases where waterfowl have been caught in fishing line, hooks or tackle.

“Hooks and lines caught on branches, dumped in the water or simply left lying around, can harm these animals and cause them to become tangled on legs, wings, and beaks of birds,” said Midrand SPCA.

Inspector Ayanda Ngcofe-Carelse of Midrand SPCA and his kennel assistant Sam Thobejane went out to see if they could assist the three waterfowl.

They managed to catch two of the ducks, one which they could untangle and release themselves and the other was transported to PetStream Veterinary Clinic for assistance after which it was also released.

Despite pulling out all the stops, the third duck could not be caught. “We set up some traps in the hopes that soon we would be able to bring this bird to safety and stop the suffering endured.” The SPCA team also had some help from residents including Robert Wallace who helped to catch the ducks and monitored the situation for the SPCA on the weekend should the third duck end up in the trap. Midrand SPCA further advised the public to be careful and considerate towards birds and wildlife. “

Your pleasure is causing their pain and suffering.”
