GLEN AUSTIN – Sister Beverly Sebola said that it was vital for one to visit the antenatal clinic and follow their appointments for a healthy and happy pregnancy.

To wrap up Pregnancy Awareness Week (February 10 to 16), Life Carstenhof Hospital’s Sister Beverly Sebola gave advice for a successful and happy pregnancy.

Sebola, the unit manager in the maternity ward said, “You [pregnant women] can experience morning sickness, vomiting, become sleepy, or start craving certain foods.” Sebola added one should make sure they visited an antenatal clinic as they would need to be seen by a healthcare worker.

“This will allow you to confirm your pregnancy and the gestational age [duration of pregnancy]. “Thereafter, different tests will need to be done at different stages. Your urine will have to be monitored for infections because the more infections you have, it can risk the health of your baby.

Blood pressure has to be checked as it can cause complications in your pregnancy.” Following that, the growth of the baby would have to be monitored as tests for abnormalities needed to be done so that they could be treated if need be.

“This also allows that if there are abnormalities, you are aware early on so that you can decide whether you want to terminate your pregnancy or not.” Sebola advised that pregnant women should exercise, however, not all exercises should be done, one should rather get advice from a professional trainer as some routines could harm the baby.

“The core message for pregnant women is that you take care of yourself, follow your antenatal clinic appointments, and do not miss them because they are vital to your pregnancy being successful.”
